…As ACEITSE Masters programme foreign scholars get new lodge

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, on Thursday, received three new foreign students recently admitted into the Masters programme of the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative STEM Education (ACEITSE). The students, Solomon Yeboah, Jessie Foli and Andrew Tetteh, all Ghanians, were received by the Vice Chancellor and other members of the university management at VC’s Conference Room, main campus, Ojo.

Director of ACEITSE, Prof. Rasheed Sanni, told the management that the students, who arrived the country on Wednesday, were the first batch of international students expected to run their programmes at the Centre, noting that their PhD counterparts would also resume later in the month.

He thanked the University for making a new lodge available to the students and assured that everything was in place to ensure the students’ comfort during their stay on the Ojo campus for the one year duration of their programme.

In her remarks, Prof. Olatunji-Bello congratulated the students for choosing LASU, even as she assured them of their safety on the campus.

“The LASU campus is very safe for you; you have nothing to fear. And please take time to explore places outside the campus, but ensure you do so under the Centre leaders’ guidance. I congratulate you for choosing LASU and I thank your parents for trusting us with you. Extend our regards to them.”

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo, Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu and University Librarian, Dr. Emmanuel Layi Adebayo also joined the Vice Chancellor in welcoming the students and assuring them that they have made the right choice.

Representative of the students, Solomon Yeboah, expressed appreciation to the university for the warm reception that they had received since their arrival in the country on Wednesday. “We had certain fears before we came. But the fears have been dispelled. We will do our best to ensure that your investment in us is fruitful”, he enthused.

Also on the ACEITSE team to the visit were Deputy Centre Leader, Dr. Akeem Akitoye; Assistant Director, Dr. Musa Ajisegiri; Assistant Director, Dr. Adedoja Wusu; Centre Procurement Officer, Mrs. Bosede Agoro; Assistant Programme Secretary, Mr. Afinah and Communication Officer, Miss. Tope Ogunmokun.

Yusuf, a Physical and Health Education Sandwich Degree student of the University from the Ilesha Campus, won the women’s 64kg category by lifting 93kg in the Snatch and Clean and Jerk: 113kg, 116kg, 119kg with a total result of 212kg.

The Vice Chancellor congratulates Yusuf on the the performance, declaring  her feat praiseworthy. She expresses her immense pride at the 19-year old’s uncommon feat, which she believes is product of hardwork, dedication and grit. According to the VC, Yusuf represents a breath of fresh air, an inspiration for other young ladies, especially those whose passion lie in sports.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello notes that apart from bringing glory to Nigeria, Yusuf’s achievement will further draw attention to the immense sporting potentials in the Lagos State University,  in advancement of her administration’s effort to place LASU on the global map through sports.  

She prays that Yusuf will continue to do exploits for her motherland, Nigeria
