The Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello Colloquium: Accolades Troop In For The Honouree On Account Of Her Leadership
A one day colloquium co-hosted by the 156th ECOWAS Youth Ambassador, Emmanuel Agida, provided a platform for the exchange ideas and knowledge on the theme; “Education: A Vision for the Future”.
The all-inclusive event, which was graced by dignitaries and the crème de la crème of the State, was held on Thursday, 23rd May 2024 at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, main campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The Vice Chancellor and Honouree, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, in her remarks, extended her heartfelt appreciation to the 156th ECOWAS Youth Ambassador, Emmanuel Agida, who organised the colloquium and authored a book titled The LASU STEWARD in her honour.
The professor of Physiology celebrated the ambassador’s tireless efforts, dedication, meticulous planning, and attention to details which made the event a resounding success. She lauded Mr Agida for his ability to bring together a diverse group of scholars and dignitaries, adding that it is a testament to his exceptional leadership and organisational skills.
“This event is not just a celebration of achievements but also a commitment to the power of collaboration and community togetherness in our academic pursuits. I am proud to be part of an institution that values knowledge sharing, intellectual curiosity, and excellence”, she said.
The 12th Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe was the keynote speaker, and he delivered a lecture titled “Education: A vision for the Future”. He explained that the fundamental principle of education equality is making sure that every learner, regardless of background, has access to high-quality education.
The professor of Botany noted that the future of education is not a pre-written script but a collaborative story waiting to be penned. “Through an embodiment of a vision that prioritises accessibility, adaptability, and a lifelong learning culture, it is certain that an education system that empowers all learners will be created”, he added.
Professor Ogundipe also stated that technology, when used thoughtfully, would be the bridge that connects students across borders, personalise learning journeys, and ignite a passion for knowledge.
“Ultimately, the future of education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a love for learning that empowers individuals to navigate and shape the ever-changing world they inhabit. This is a future worth striving for, a future where education becomes a lifelong journey, not a destination”, he concluded.
The 156th ECOWAS Youth Ambassador and organiser of the Colloquium, Emmanuel Agida, in his address, appreciated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello for the incredible privilege bestowed upon him to author the book and host the colloquium in her honour.
He further stated that “Prof. Olatunji-Bello, your tenure as Vice-Chancellor, has been marked by remarkable achievements and transformative initiatives that have elevated Lagos State University to unprecedented heights. Under your leadership, LASU has emerged as a beacon of excellence, recognised as the best university in West Africa. Your commitment to inclusivity and diversity has ensured that every student, regardless of their background, has access to quality education and opportunities for personal and professional growth”.
Dignitaries at the event include the First Lady of Lagos State, ably represented by Dr. Folasade Fadare, the Chairman of the Occasion and Representative of the Chancellor, Miss. Aminat Lawal, Special guest of honour, Hon. Tunji Bello, former Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Minister of State for Youth Development ably represented by Mr. Dotun Omoleye, Hon. Commissioner for Youth and Social Development ably represented by Mr. Augustine Mautin Kiki, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Students’ Union Affairs on Lagos State Tertiary Education Hon. Samuel Olawale Kappo, Hon. Stella Foluke Osafile, Member, House Assembly, Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1.
Also, at the event was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board ably represented by Mr. Giwa Moore, Representative of the Pro-Chancellor, Barrister Adebayo Akinsanya, members of the management team, Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) Prof. Bilikis Lafiaji-Okunneye, Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTEC), Prof. Olumuyiwa Odunsanya ably represented the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Prof. Abiodun Denloye, Deans of Faculties and Professors, Directors of Centres, Heads of Departments, Members of Staff, and World-Class Students.
