TRIBUTE TO AN OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC LEADER: PROFESSOR IBIYEMI OLATUNJI-BELLO

It gives me immense pleasure to pay tribute to Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello as she bows out meritoriously after a remarkable tenure as Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU).

Her tenure represents an important chapter in the history of our great University. She brought to the office intellectual distinction, administrative experience, discipline, courage and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence. Under her leadership, LASU recorded significant milestones in academic development, institutional governance, infrastructure, research, innovation and the overall standing and reputation of the University.

Beyond the physical and academic transformation witnessed during her administration, Professor Olatunji-Bello demonstrated that effective university leadership requires more than scholarship. It demands vision, diplomacy, resilience and the ability to bring together the diverse interests of students, academics, administrators, alumni, government and the wider community around a common purpose.

Her administration strengthened the culture of excellence for which LASU has increasingly become recognised and helped position the University as an institution capable of competing confidently among leading universities in Nigeria and beyond. These accomplishments constitute an enduring legacy for which she deserves considerable commendation.

On a personal note, I owe Professor Olatunji-Bello and the University community a special debt of gratitude. It was during her tenure as Vice-Chancellor that the Lagos State University graciously conferred upon me an Honorary Doctorate Degree in recognition of my contributions to banking, entrepreneurship, public service and national development. I regard that honour as one of the most treasured recognitions of my career and public life, particularly because it came from an institution with which I have long identified and whose progress remains very dear to me.

I therefore record my profound appreciation to Professor Olatunji-Bello for the honour, warmth and graciousness extended to me during her tenure.

As she concludes this distinguished chapter of service, she should look back with pride and fulfilment. University administrations come and go, but truly consequential leadership is measured by the institutions strengthened, standards raised, lives touched and foundations laid for succeeding generations. By these measures, Professor Olatunji-Bello has served with distinction.

I congratulate her on the successful completion of her tenure and salute her years of dedicated service to LASU, Lagos State and the Nigerian academic community.

May this new chapter bring her fulfilment, good health and opportunities for even greater service to our State and nation. I am confident that the experience, knowledge and institutional wisdom she has accumulated will continue to be of immense benefit to Nigeria.

Congratulations, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, on a remarkable tenure. Your footprints at Lagos State University will remain indelible.
