The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has reiterated her administration’s unwavering commitment to positioning LASU as a leading research and learning hub.
She stated this during the 28th convocation ceremony of the university for the award of Diplomas, First degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees held on Wednesday.
According to her, the management takes the mandate very seriously to produce quality manpower with the necessary skills set to meet industry demands, both in Lagos State and Nigeria.
To this end, Prof. Olatunji-Bello said since the 27th Convocation Ceremony held about a year ago, the university has made significant strides towards its vision of becoming the best university in West Africa. “These achievements have bolstered the university’s ranking and firmly consolidated its position as the leading institution in the region.

“I am pleased to inform you that feedback from employers indicates that LASU graduates are performing excellently in their respective workplaces.
“Furthermore, the achievements of our alumni in their careers remain a source of immense pride for the university and serve as motivation for us to continue our focus on human capital development for the benefit of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole,” she disclosed.

Best graduating student, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Udoh Elsie Abidemi, CGPA 4.65
Giving the graduation statistics, Prof Olatunji-Bello said the university will confer Diplomas and Degrees on a total of 11,917 students who have been found worthy by the Senate of the university having demonstrated excellence in both character and learning and are therefore worthy of being awarded the certificate of this prestigious University.
She added: “A total of 971 diploma students are graduating this year, out of which 123 graduated with Distinctions, 550 with Upper Credit, 287 with Lower Credit, and 11 with Pass.
“Among the 8711 students graduating with First Degrees programmes from the University, 192 came out with First Class honours, 3076 with Second Class Upper Division, 4397 with Second Class Lower Division, 990 with Third Class, and 39 with Pass and from the college of Medicine, we have 17 with unclassified MBBS/BDS Degrees.”

For higher degree programmes, she disclosed that out of the 2,235 Postgraduate students graduating, there is 302 Postgraduate Diplomas, 1,132 Academic Masters degrees, 639 Professional Masters degrees, 125 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees and 37 Professional doctoral Degrees.
The Vice-Chancellor while congratulating the graduating students urged them not to relent in pursuit of excellence. “Contrary to what some of you might think, graduating today doesn’t mean you have arrived; earning a university degree is not an end in itself but rather a means to an end. As I foresee it, the ultimate goal is to use your knowledge and skill to drive meaningful change wherever you find yourselves.

Nwosu Isioma Sybil with a CGPA of 4.93 emerged the best graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session.
She achieved First Class Honours in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Science.
