The Lagos State University has emerged the best university in Sub-Saharan Africa in the just released Universitas Indonesia (UI) GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024. The university also retained its spot as the best university in Nigeria, a position it has held for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023).
In an announcement that was made through a live broadcast from Universidade São Paulo by the global ranking body on Thursday, 12th December 2024, the Lagos-based institution also emerged the 23rd best university in Africa from the 25th spot, and 709th from 761st position it held in 2023.
The ranking, which is now in its 15th edition, showcases 1,477 institutions across 95 countries, making it one of the most credible global university ranking systems dedicated to assessing the sustainability performance of institutions worldwide.
LASU’s latest ranking in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is coming on the heels of the recently released Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa Universities Ranking, which placed the institution as the best state university in Nigeria, the second best public university, the fourth best university overall in Nigeria and the 30th best university in Africa.
LASU, sandwiched among only North African universities on the Africa ranking table, records its best outing yet at this year’s UI GreenMetric World University Ranking.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, while reacting to the news, congratulated the entire university community for its concerted efforts towards the actualisation of the feat. She also praised the Lagos State Government for providing the necessary support to fuel the institutions’ drive towards the peak position among universities in the country in the area of sustainability.
She, however, assured that the university will not rest on its oars as her administration continues to provide impactful leadership to achieve its shared vision.
Recall that earlier in the year, LASU made waves by emerging the second most subscribed university in Nigeria by admission seekers in the 2024 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board Examination, following its 3rd place position the year before. The university is also reputed for being the most digitally advanced state university in Nigeria as well as the AD Scientific Index Ranking first choice State institution in the country..
